Hollywood is not only glamour and fame. There is a lot of issues like long work hours, payment problems, copyright failures, etc. But one of the issues that affect me the most is the gender differences.
sexism is a problem that is linked to the most diverse areas of our society. However, for the last decade, this type of issues related to women in all areas has become more public since the woman is starting to feel strong to stand up to themselves.
First of all, one thing that needs to change immediately is the gender inequality in the Hollywood Industry. It’s explicit the low number of women as the main actress in movies.
And it’s worse when you analyze how many females are working behind the camera: Women make up only 1.9% of directors, 11.2% of writers and 18.9% of producers. I have been thinking about this problem since the beginning of my career as a filmmaker. Before, I wanted to be a Director of Photography, but I had to listen to several people saying “That’s not for women” for being not as strong as men to operate a camera and move pieces of equipment.
another problem related to this is the huge pay gap between genders. An example is what the actress Jennifer Lawrence (who’s the most well-paid actress) had been through. In 2015 she wrote an article that denounces receiving lower pay than her male coworkers, for the recording of the movie “American Hustle”. Lawrence received only 7% of the movie's pay, while actors Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale received 9%.
"When the Sony hack happened and I found out how much less I was being paid than the lucky people with dicks, I didn’t get mad at Sony, I got mad at myself.” writes Lawerence.
in addition to wage issues, also the movie industry runs through other complications, such as demanding female physical standards, more nudity in the scenes, and even harassment and cases of rape by co-workers. What some people would say to explain why it’s happening is that Movie Industry is not art, it’s an industry that needs to sell what sells the most and female characters does not sell.
I want to make movies to be able to speak up for all those minors that are afraid to fight for their rights. I hope more people in the industry think likely.
Now I want to know, what's the Hollywood industry problem that you want to change?
